The Skeletal Lighthouse

Todays’s architecture has chaned the way we look athe our surroundings. Where once we could see the sky above the houses in the distance and even close by now people can see sky scrapers. The more traditional buildings are fading fast.

Even lighthouses out at sea aren’t sage from this architectural design revelution. Do you recall those scenic lighthouses depicted on picture postcards and old movies? Maybe you even saw one from afar when you visited the sea side (I remember taking a tour of lighthouses when I was young on a road trip with cheap car rental usa). Well the last I remember they seemed to be made of stone for the most part or something similiar and had little slits for windows.

Well not anymore. Look at this one here. It made of iron thats called hyperboloid. Its described as being very graceful and airy. Well airy it is as it has what seems to be a see through skeletal framework.

however although its described as modern it seems its not that modern at all. The date for this interesting light house is 1911! Could it be this designer foresaw the minimillistic tendancies of designers to come?

Maybe these type of lighthouses are specific to certain areas around the world. This particular one is based in Eruope in what is now called the Ukraine. The lighthouse was designed by an architect by the name of Vladimir G. Schuchov.

Actually it upon closer inspection this structure reminds me of the Eifel tower that I believe was built around the same time. I wonder if the designer was well travelled enoug to know and may be saw the Eifel tower in France. Could it have been the inspiration for the structure or maybe it was the other way round…
