Snap Impressions from your Window Treatments
Most window treatments tend to follow a fashion just as surely as any outfits your wear. You can often tell a lot about a person simply by viewing their window treatments, even before you get to meet them! There are the windows fitted with the latest in vertical blinds that open down the middle so that the blinds are clustered at each side of the window when open. There are also the vertical blinds that open to the side and the much older style of horizontal blinds which still have a place in some rooms of the house.
Next you have the epitome of middle class elegance in freshly laundered, spotlessly white net curtains, each fold standing to attention with perfect precision whilst the lace at the bottom is of a heavier, clearly more expensive quality and slightly scented of reed diffusers. Of course, you then have those houses whose windows lack any other treatment than the ubiquitous draw curtains, providing the world with the blank stare of glass. These probably get you thinking as to how naked these windows looked!
Finally, you find the window treatments where the nets are slumped in front of the window, held in place by a drooping window wire: the cheapest net possible, often the latest in off-white, or slightly graying from gathering dust. Does this latter window tell you that the owner is not house proud or simply that they have so much else going on in their lives that draping the curtains like soldiers on parade is fairly low down on their list of practicalities?
Whichever way you look at it, how householders present their window treatments to the world helps to create a first impression of the person’s home these windows belong to. It has been said that we all form an opinion of somebody within the first few seconds of meeting them. However, I think that this opinion has already been formed from the impression gained by how the householder has tackled their window treatments!
