Dubai, city of the future
Dubai could be thought of as one of the most modern cities in the world when it comes to architecture. All over the city there are fantastic skyscrapers made out of glass that shimmer during the day and glow at night. Some of these buildings are hotels, some offices and some even apartments. They are all magnificent with the Burj al-Arab hotel being one of the best examples.
Perhaps the most astonishing thing about the development of Dubai (especially its waterfront) is the fact that it has taken less than twenty years for the buildings to go up. This is a city that is changing itself for the better and leading the world with cutting edge modern architecture. The re-development of Dubai is still going on and will be for at least another decade. Once it is complete I can imagine it will look truly amazing.
The most ambitious of the projects that have gone on in Dubai is probably Palm Island. This is a man made island situated on Dubai’s waterfront. The island is shaped like a palm tree and it is believed that three of these islands will be created, with the last one being the largest.
On the island’s completion, it will house around 2,000 villas, 40 luxury hotels. There will be shopping centres and movie theatres. The designers believe it will support around 500,000 people. For a man made island to achieve this much is nothing short of astonishing and it surely places Dubai as the leader in modern and innovative architecture.
There are, of course, many other amazing projects in the pipeline for Dubai and one can only imagine how the city will end up looking once the cranes and construction has all gone.
